Suggested Reading: Editors note: "DHEA was in the realm of the quacks for a long time, which kept a lot of reputable scientists out of the field. But today there's too much good work going on to ignore"...... Dr. Arthur Schwartz, Temple University Researcher. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester (DHEAS) are major adrenal hormones in humans which, either in their native forms or as precursors of other steroids, exert remarkable diversity of biologic actions.(Authors emphasis) DHEA and DHEAS are regarded as steroids of youth, because in both men and women their levels peak in early adulthood and then monotonously decrease with age." The outlook for this research is brighter than ever before and this is presented in an effort to encourage further research studies on DHEA and it is also an attempt to educate those of us 'in our sixth-plus decade to the benefits of DHEA or the lack thereof. DHEA is not a drug but rather a naturally occurring hormone which our bodies manufacture on a regular basis. Unfortunately, as we age this manufacturing process declines rapidly, apparently, to our detriment. Caveat Emptor In Latin Caveat emptor means, "let the buyer beware". Being aware of my predicament , I was determined to obtain replacement dosages of DHEA as described in a1990 study. I questioned the FDA and the DEA and was told that this is not a "controlled substance", (as in an illegal drug). I inquired of the hazards of buying amounts overseas and declaring them during a customs check and I was informed that there would be no problem. I made inquiries into Mexico, Canada and Europe with no results, just ignorance of this substance. And then to my amazement I found I could purchase pharmaceutical grade DHEA mixed with Vitamin C as a food supplement. Prior to this source all that was available was a Mexican yarn extract sold in health food stores. However, warns Raymond A. Daynes, associate chairman of pathology and head of the division of cell biology and immunology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City "What is sold in health food stores is garbage. These pills contain only enough biologically active DHEA to affect a small mouse." DHEA can be legally bought and sold as a supplement as a result of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act! I'm talking about real, European pharmaceutical grade DHEA and not some ground-up Mexican yam sold as a precursor to DHEA. The particular DHEA that I buy and sell comes in bottles of 60 capsules containing 25mg of DHEA. I order them over the phone and they are shipped to me via UPS and when I sell them I ship them via the U.S. Postal system, 2 day priority mail. Is this legal? Yes it is! If the DEA or the FDA declared DHEA to be a "Controlled Substance" then this mail order availability would cease. Then you would have to find a physician or veterinary who would be willing to write you a prescription for DHEA which could then be filled by a "Compounding Pharmacy". If DHEA should be declared a controlled substance after all these decades of availability and access, it would be a shame and would limit its use only via the prescription route and as of this date there are very few physicians who are knowledgeable about DHEA or willing to prescribe it. ---- Norman Rose DHEA 60 capsules 25mg-----------------$24.95 ---------See order form

On DHEA & No Fat Cooking by Norman Rose Foreword by H. C. Palmer, M.D., F.A.C.S.M,Although the benefits of exogenous DHEA in humans are not known for certain, some good research would indicate there are definite positive effects in our older population. The same research also points to negative effects when the substance is taken in doses over 25 mg daily. Norm Rose reviews the effects, good and bad and will let you decide for yourself, or if you are really curious, do some research on your own. I suggest you do your research somewhere where financial gain is not a consideration, such as a university library. I hope you enjoy this helpful and thought-provoking book. H.C. Palmer, M.D.
