Hyaluronic acid is a Polysaccharide (or mucopolysaccharide) that contains amino acids. It is one of the components of the skin's dermis. The dermis is made up of collagen and elastin fibers and a gel-like substance consisting of hyaluronic acid, chondroitine sulfate, dermatan sulfate, glycoproteins and water.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural extract used in skin care products. It can be extracted from shark skin, microorganisms, and other substances.  A pharmaceutical-quality hyaluronic acid can retain over 400 times its own volume in water. Because of the complicated extraction and purification process it is an expensive ingredient. However, recent advances in biotechnology have increased its availability.

The percentage of hyaluronic acid in the skin is closely related to the hydration (how much water) of skin. Hyaluronic acid retains water in the intercellular matrix of the dermis. It creates a visco-elastic solution that fills the spaces between the collagen fibers in the dermis. It can penetrate the stratum corneum, because of the molecular weight and create a protective film comparable to the epidermal structure. Scientific tests and biopsies have shown increased glycosaminoglycans (amino) sugars made hyaluronic acid in the dermis, as well as increased hydration and better elasticity of the skin.

Some amino acids such as hyaluronic acid naturally prevent soluble collagen from changing into insoluble collagen. Hyaluronic acid also makes collagen fibers more supple and hydrates the tissues. The suppleness, softness and smoothness of the skin is increased as well.

Scientific studies show that the highest quality of mucopolysaccarides and hyaluronic acid, when hydrolyzed and used in a cream, increases the content of water in the dermis and increases the skin's elasticity.

First used in cosmetics, hyaluronic acid is classified as a medical device, not a drug (used for its physical properties). Hyaluronic acid  is now used in the medical field such as:

* Orthopedics use it to lubricate joints.
* Gynecologists use it to prevent surgical adhesions; and
* It is used to help the eye retain its shape and protect tissues when removing cataracts and implanting  Intro-ocular lenses in opthalmic surgery.

What is osteoarthritis?
An estimated 21 million adults in the United States live with osteoarthritis--one of the most common types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, which is the connective tissue that cushions the ends of bones within the joint. It is characterized by pain, joint damage, and limited motion. The disease generally occurs late in life, and most commonly affects the hands and large weight-bearing joints. Although the disease can impact several joints, the knees are often affected. Age, female gender, and obesity are risk factors for this condition.
